Message from the Minister for Tourism and Sport, The Hon. Michael Healy MP

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Kalbar Sunflower Festival which highlights the personality and uniqueness of the Scenic Rim.

The Kalbar Sunflower Festival is supported by the Queensland Government through Round 25 of Tourism and Events Queensland’s Queensland Destination Events Program, which strives to highlight the vital link between the wonderful events we host in our great state and the diverse destinations in which they take place.

Events such as the Kalbar Sunflower Festival foster community pride, impart local culture with all who visit and make meaningful contributions to the local economy.

Beyond the Kalbar Sunflower Festival there is so much to see, do and experience in the Scenic Rim. I encourage all visitors from far and wide to soak in all the delights of the Scenic Rim and make the most of all the experiences unique to this special part of Queensland.

Congratulations to the organisers plus all those involved in working tirelessly to stage such a great event and for being part of the Queensland Destination Events Program.

A celebration born out of hardship

Nestled in the heart of the picturesque Scenic Rim Region you will find us amongst the million sunflowers at our annual Kalbar Sunflower Festival. In 2021, Lucerne farmers Jenny and Russell Jenner were struggling to keep their crops alive during one of the longest droughts in living memory. Water had gotten so bad that they couldn’t grow their main crop, but after Russell brought a bunch of sunflowers home from the grocery store the two had a light bulb moment. Sunflowers need very little water and they look spectacular and from there the festival grew.

Life hasn’t gotten any easier for the Jenner’s and in late 2021 Russell was diagnosed with Stage 4 Oesophageal Cancer.

His stoic nature saw him battle through and help create happiness at the 2022 and 2023 sunflower festival where over $115,000 was raised for cancer care. Unfortunately Russell lost his battle a few months later in July 2023. Jenny is determined to continue farming and creating a happy and joyful experience for visitors to the farm once a year with the annual sunflower festival. With a mighty team behind her we are busy planning this years festival to make it bigger and brighter and dedicate it to our Sunflower Man - Russell. Whilst also raising money for cancer care.

Grab your family and friends, and join us for a fun weekend filled with live entertainment, helicopter rides, workshops for children, , mini photo sessions, arts, crafts and much more.
